‘We’re diagnosed as sociopaths — but we’re just misunderstood’

As a teenager, Kanika Batra knew she was “a bit of a menace”. As well as playing truant, she says, “I stole from my parents, I pushed a girl down a flight of stairs because she insulted one of my friends and I got another girl suspended from school.” Seven years ago, aged 21, she was finally diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder (ASPD). In other words, Batra is a sociopath.

These days “sociopath” is an overused term to describe everyone from notorious serial killers such as Ted Bundy to your crazy ex-boyfriend. It has become a common theme in light entertainment: just open Netflix or a podcast app for a glut of series detailing their lives and crimes.
