Taylor Swift Debuts ‘Dear Reader’ Live at Tokyo Concert on Eras Tour

The Eras tour is back in full swing, which means Swifties have also resumed tracking which of Taylor Swift‘s deep cuts have made it into the surprise song segment of the three-hour-long show. At her first show back, at the Tokyo Dome in Japan, the singer launched into the live debut of “Dear Reader,” a deep cut from the deluxe edition of Midnights.

The record finds Swift delivering advice on finding balance. “Dear reader, bend when you can, snap when you have to/Dear reader, you don’t have to answer just ’cause they asked you,” she sings. “Dear reader, the greatest of luxuries is your secrets/Dear reader, when you aim at the devil, make sure you don’t miss.” But even her guidance comes with a caveat: “Never take advice from someone who’s falling apart.”

For the second surprise song of the night, Swift selected “Holy Ground” from her 2012 album Red.

Swift will perform three more shows in Tokyo before jetting off to Australia later this month — after, of course, she stops in Las Vegas this weekend for the Super Bowl as an honorary Kansas City Chiefs member. Over the next few months, the singer will perform dates in Singapore, Sweden, Portugal, Spain, Scotland, England, Ireland, Netherlands, Italy, Poland, Austria, the U.S., and Canada.

By the time she picks up the tour in May, she will have released her latest studio album, The Tortured Poets Department, set for release on April 19. During the Tokyo concert, Swift revealed that if she hadn’t won an award at the Grammys on Sunday, where she announced the album’s title and release date, she would have saved it as a treat for the concert.

“I thought, ‘OK, if I’m lucky enough to get up there and win one thing tonight, I’m just gonna do it. I’m just gonna announce my new album,’” Swift told the audience. “And luckily enough, that ended up happening. My backup plan was I was going to do it tonight in Tokyo. But thanks to you and your support, I was lucky enough to win a Grammy and tell you about it on stage at the Grammys. And now we can talk about it afterward, we can do like a debrief tonight.”
