Rowhome explosion, fire under investigation in south Baltimore


Firefighters called for an explosion at a southwest Baltimore rowhome encountered a fire at the scene.City fire officials said firefighters were called around 8:50 a.m. Saturday to the 1500 of Ridgely Street, where they saw fire coming from the sidewalk in addition to an overhanging power line. The incident commander initially assessed that there was a natural gas leak nearby.Further investigation revealed an explosion in an occupied rowhome. There were no reports of injuries.City fire officials said an initial observation was that the electrical powerline may have been the source of the explosion secondary to a natural gas leak; however no determination has been made. A cause of the fire and explosion and remains under investigation. Baltimore Gas and Electric said it is aware of the incident and its crews are at the scene investigating.
