John Oliver Calls Out Grasping Landlords In Report On Skyrocketing Rents

John Oliver on Sunday identified that housing is now “the factor a 16-year-old TikTok millionaire can afford and you may’t.” (Watch the video under.)

On “Last Week Tonight” the host took purpose at skyrocketing rents and a number of the grasping attitudes behind them.

He famous that the common month-to-month lease was at an all-time excessive and that there wasn’t a single county within the nation the place a minimal wage employee can afford to lease a “modest 2-bedroom house.”

Landlords who blamed “market fee” for elevating rents didn’t get a move from Oliver.

He confirmed a clip of Dave Ramsey, a private finance persona, assuring a guilt-ridden landlord that elevating lease to the market fee “doesn’t make me a foul Christian.”

“I didn’t displace the individual out of that home if they’ll not afford it. {The marketplace} did,” Ramsey stated on “The Ramsey Present.”

“After all kicking somebody out of your own home doesn’t make you a foul Christian,” Oliver stated. “It’s within the Beatitudes: ‘Blessed are the poor in spirit. For theirs is the dominion of heaven. Fucked are the poor in cash. For theirs is the dominion of landlords. Wazzaaaaaaa!!’”

Then there was footage of Bob Nicolls of Monarch Funding and Administration Group gushing over the “unprecedented opportunity” to “press rents.” “The place are folks gonna go? They’ll’t go anyplace,” he reasoned.

Oliver accused the agency of treating folks like paninis. See what he meant:
