AND HAVING A SENSE OF PURPOSE. MEANWHILE, SEASONS ARE CHANGING AND THAT CAN IMPACT YOUR MENTAL WELL-BEING AS WELL. NORMALLY, PEOPLE MAY THINK OF SEASONAL DEPRESSION AS HAPPENING MAYBE IN THE FALL AND WINTER, BUT SEASONAL DEPRESSION CAN HAPPEN IN THE SPRING AND SUMMERTIME AS WELL. I THINK FOR A LOT OF US, THAT ACTUALLY WAS A SURPRISE. JOINING US THIS MORNING TO TALK MORE ABOUT ALL OF THIS REGARDING SEASONAL DEPRESSION AND YOUR MENTAL WELL BEING, IS SUPRIYA GILL. SO AGAIN, I THINK THAT CAN CATCH SOME FOLKS OFF GUARD BECAUSE THE WINTER TIME MAKES SENSE FOR A LOT OF FOLKS. THEY GET STUCK INDOORS, BUT DURING THE SPRING AND SUMMER, WE’RE ALSO SEEING SEASONAL DEPRESSION. YEAH, IT CAN BE PRETTY SURPRISING, ESPECIALLY BECAUSE IN THE WINTER TIME WE HAVE SHORTER DAYS, LESS SUNLIGHT, AND THAT IS ONE OF THE BIG CONTRIBUTORS TO SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER IN THE WINTER. IN THE SPRING, WHAT WE’RE SEEING IS FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE THAT HAVE BEEN FEELING DEPRESSED IN THE WINTER, IN THE SPRING, THE SUN’S OUT. LONGER DAYS, PEOPLE ARE OUT AND ABOUT. AND THAT KIND OF INCONSISTENCY BETWEEN WHAT THEY THOUGHT WOULD HAPPEN IN THE SPRING AND SEEING OTHER PEOPLE OUT AND ABOUT DOING THINGS, CAN REALLY WORSEN THEIR FEELINGS OF DEPRESSION. AND SO THAT SOCIAL COMPARISON CAN BE A DRIVING FACTOR. YEAH. AND AGAIN, SOCIAL MEDIA THESE DAYS DOESN’T HELP FOR A LOT OF THOSE ASPECTS OF THINGS. UH, STATISTICALLY. WHAT ARE YOU SEEING? YEAH, I WOULD SAY THAT STATISTICALLY, ONE OF THE STARTLING STATISTICS ABOUT THIS TIME OF THE YEAR IS THAT SUICIDE RATES ARE ACTUALLY HIGHER. SO MANY PEOPLE THINK THAT SUICIDE RATES UNDERSTANDABLY WOULD BE HIGHER IN THE WINTER. DECEMBER IS ACTUALLY THE LOWEST IN TERMS OF SUICIDE RATES. WHILE SPRING LATE SPRING AND EARLY SUMMER HAVE THE HIGHEST RATES OF COMPLETION. SO WE KNOW THAT PEOPLE ARE STRUGGLING WITH THEIR EMOTIONS AT THIS TIME, AND NOT ALL SIGNS ARE GOING TO BE AS EVIDENT AS OTHERS. SO WHAT SHOULD WE BE LOOKING OUT FOR, WHETHER IT’S IN OURSELVES OR WITH OUR LOVED ONES? I THINK THAT YOU’RE RIGHT THAT WE CAN HAVE DIFFERENT INTENSITIES IN TERMS OF THE SYMPTOMS THAT PEOPLE MIGHT BE EXPERIENCING. WE MIGHT BE EXPERIENCING SOCIAL WITHDRAWAL. SO THAT MIGHT MEAN SAYING NO TO MORE EVENTS, GETTING TOGETHER. WE MIGHT SEE MORE SADNESS. WE MIGHT SEE MORE SLEEPING OR LESS SLEEPING. CHANGES IN APPETITE, MORE EATING OR UNDER EATING. SO IT REALLY KIND OF DEPENDS ON THE PERSON AND HOW IT’S COMING UP FOR THEM. YEAH. SO BASICALLY IT’S YOUR BASELINE AND HOW DRASTICALLY YOU’RE GOING EITHER WHICH WAY. THAT SOUNDS LIKE OKAY. SO AGAIN, AND JUST LIKE ANYTHING SOLUTIONS CAN BE FLUID DEPENDING ON THE PERSON. SO WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BETTER SUGGESTIONS. YOU CAN YOU CAN GIVE FOLKS OUT THERE. WELL SO THE BIG THREE EXERCISE SLEEP AND DIET ARE REALLY IMPORTANT. ONE OF THE THINGS WITH FEELING DOWN OR FEELING LIKE YOUR EMOTIONS ARE CHANGING AT THIS TIME, THAT CAN HAPPEN IN THE SPRING. SPECIFICALLY IS A CHANGE IN ALLERGY SEASON. SO THIS ISN’T SOMETHING WE COMMONLY ASSOCIATE WITH SPRING. HOWEVER, WE KNOW THAT INFLAMMATION IN OUR BODY IS TIED TO OUR MOOD AND WORSENING OF THE MOOD AND ALLERGIES CAN CAUSE INFLAMMATION. JUST BEING AWARE OF THAT AND MAKING SURE THAT YOU’RE TAKING CARE OF YOURSELF WITH EXERCISE. SO AEROBIC EXERCISE, ESPECIALLY GETTING OUT, GETTING A BRISK WALK IN, GETTING YOUR HEART RATE UP THAT CAN HAVE REALLY IMPORTANT BENEFITS FOR OUR MOOD. AND SOME STUDIES HAVE SHOWED IT’S AS POWERFUL AS ANTIDEPRESSANT MEDICATION. SURE, IT’S A BIG MOOD CHANGER RIGHT THERE. YEAH, EXACTLY. AND THEN GOING BACK TO THE INFLAMMATION PIECE AND ANTI-INFLAMMATORY DIETS. SO EATING THINGS LIKE LEAFY GREENS, FRUITS, NUTS, BERRIES THAT CAN HAVE A REALLY POWERFUL IMPACT ON INFLAMMATION AND DECREASING INFLAMMATION IS GOOD FOR OUR MIND. AND OUR BODY. YEAH.
